The cause of reuniting the island of Cyprus received fresh support in the UK last night with British parliamentarians responding to the Federation’s calls for Cyprus to be pushed further up the foreign policy agenda of this country.

British Parliamentarians last night voiced their strong support for efforts to reunite the island of Cyprus, at a dinner-discussion held in the Houses of Parliament by the National Federation of Cypriots in the UK, with guest of honour the Cyprus Government Spokesman, Mr Stefanos Stefanou.

British Cypriots last night called on Prime Minister David Cameron to ensure that the United Kingdom honours its treaty obligations to Cyprus and applies real pressure on Turkey so that the latter works with sincerity towards a just and comprehensive settlement for the benefit of all Cypriots. At the same time they reminded Turkey, through her UK Ambassador, that the puppet regime in the northern areas of Cyprus occupied by the Turkish army could never be made legitimate.

A recent surge of one-sided media coverage in Britain which effectively endorses Turkey’s positions in relation to Cyprus and unfairly vilifies the Republic of Cyprus today prompted a call by the President of the National Federation of Cypriots in the UK for a redressing of the balance of the debate. Mr Peter Droussiotis urged the UK Cypriot community, as well as friends of the cause of a united Cyprus and the Cypriot community’s political allies in the UK, to redouble their efforts in countering misrepresentations aimed at absolving Turkey of its serious responsibilities in Cyprus.
